ALESSANDRO MENDINI

ALESSANDRO MENDINI, THE ARCHITECT, WAS BORN IN MILAN IN 1931. HE WAS EDITOR
OF THE MAGAZINES CASABELLA, MODO AND DOMUS. BOOKS IN SEVERAL LANGUAGES HAVE
BEEN PUBLISHED ON HIS PERSONAL WORK AS WELL AS THE PROJECTS HE HAS DONE
INSIDE THE ATELIER ALCHIMIA.

HE IS ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN NEO-MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN. HE
DESIGNS OBJECTS, FURNITURE, INTERIORS AND INSTALLATIONS.

HE COLLABORATES WITH INTERNATIONAL COMPANIES LIKE ALESSI, PHILIPS AND
SWATCH, AND IS CONSULTANT TO VARIOUS MANUFACTURERS, INCLUDING SOME IN THE
FAR EAST, ON HOW TO HANDLE THEIR IMAGE AND DESIGN PROBLEMS. HE IS AN
HONORARY MEMBER OF THE BEZALEL ACADEMY OF ARTS AND DESIGN IN JERUSALEM. HE
WAS AWARDED THE COMPASSO D’ORO FOR DESIGN IN 1979 AND 1981, HE IS A
CHEVALIER DES ARTS ET DES LETTRES IN FRANCE AND WAS HONOURED BY THE
ARCHITECTURAL LEAGUE OF NEW YORK. THERE ARE WORKS BY HIM IN VARIOUS MUSEUMS
AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS.

IN 1989 HE AND HIS BROTHER FRANCESCO SET UP ATELIER MENDINI IN MILAN,
DESIGNING THE FABBRICHE ALESSI AND THE FORUM-MUSEUM AT OMEGNA, TWO
UNDERGROUND STATIONS AND THE RESTORATION OF THE VILLA COMUNALE IN NAPLES,
ITALY, A TOWER AT HIROSHIMA IN JAPAN, THE GRONINGER MUSEUM IN THE
NETHERLANDS, A HOUSING ESTATE IN LUGANO, SWITZERLAND, AND THE MADSACK OFFICE
BUILDING IN HANNOVER
